Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for the arts from her aunt Denise. She worked as night nurses to afford her aunt to have the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art as well as theatre. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt introduced her to DuVernay. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially conscious through her mother. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and raised. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism as a young student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of a member of the jury as well as examine their junk. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was hired straight after graduating from college as an intern at the studio that was small. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
